All of us feel depressed from time to time. Sometimes it may be a professional issue that makes you feel low, at other times it may be something personal such as a tiff with a boyfriend or the way you look. What is common in all these situations is that you can avoid getting depressed if you see the signs of how the given situation is making you feel. Also you can take some proactive steps to stay in control of your happiness, rather than depending on others to bring joy to your life.
Give yourself time
Irrespective of what you do, where you are and your personal situation, one thing you may have in common with most people around you, is the lack of time. Most of us are in a constant state of hurry. We rush through our lives, and at the end of the day wonder why we feel so restless. Take satisfaction in your job and any chore that you complete well. Don’t just complete tasks for the sake of getting them done, do them to the best of your ability, and you will soon no longer look at others for appreciation. Take the time to appreciate your skills and stretch what you perceive as your limits as a professional and a person.
Finding happiness every day
Instead of waiting for big occasions such as a promotion or a birthday, find happiness in your life, every day. Join a dance or an art class; take up a hobby that interests you. Play some music that makes you feel happy or read some jokes online. Meet up with some friends over a cup of coffee, and not a drink. Alcohol tends to slow down your central nervous system and makes you feel moodier and gloomier that you would before you had a drink.
Make a connection today
Pick up the phone and call a friend, a relative or a colleague to check how they are doing. Spend some time having a meaningful conversation. Connect with your community and join in activities to show your commitment. Actively support a cause that is close to your heart.
Take pride in your appearance
It is important to look good in order to feel good. Whatever your body shape and size, be happy with yourself.
- Include a regular exercise routine to your day. You don’t need to go to the gym to stay fit, take a walk around the neighborhood, walk up stairs instead of taking the elevator, and play some peppy music to dance to.
- Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables to provide wholesome nutrition. Do ensure that you drink six to eight glasses of water to stay well hydrated.
- Opt for clothes that fit well and make you look attractive. If you are unsure of what to wear, ask a friend for advice or read relevant articles online.
- Pamper yourself with a regular visit to the cosmetologist and take care of your skin.
The Esani Institute is a Paul Mitchell Partner School and offers several courses in styling and cosmetology.
