Choosing and Wearing Perfume

Choosing and wearing perfume is a matter of personal choice. What may smell great to one may not seem as alluring to another person. Sometimes a perfume that smells great on a friend may not smell the same on you. This is because the perfume reacts with your skin and it affects the way it smells. It is important to choose a perfume that suits your personality and style. While some perfumes are mysterious and deep, others are light and still others are sporty. There are some things you need to consider before you buy a perfume. Here are some tips to help you choose a great fragrance.

  • Perfumes have three layers. The top layer or note is what gives you the initial impression of the perfume. This layer tends to fade rather quickly. The middle note gives out a fragrance for about an hour and is not as strong as the top note. The base note mingles with the middle note and lasts for about half an hour of wearing the perfume. Thus, choosing a perfume simply on the basis of how it smells when you first apply it isn’t enough.
  • Perfumes are generally divided into four broad categories, floral, fresh, oriental and woody. It is a good idea to choose a fragrance based on the season and occasions you intend to wear it.
  • Don’t wear a perfume when you go shopping for fragrances. It is a good idea to select a few perfumes that smell good on a fragrance blotter and then choose one or two that you like and apply them on the inside of your wrist and your outer forearm. After about an hour or two smell the area and you should be able to make a good choice.
  • Your nose cannot smell too many perfumes at the same time. And hence, it is a good idea to smell the coffee beans that most perfume counters have and then smell another fragrance.
  • Choose perfumes according how long you intend to wear them. A mere drop or two of perfume can last almost 12 hours. Eau de parfum carries a fragrance for about eight hours, while about four spritzes of eau de toilette will achieve the same impact. If you are wearing cologne then six spritzes should help the fragrance last for eight hours.

How to wear perfume

It is a good idea to change your perfume according to the season and occasion. Choose a stronger scent for the winters than you would for the summers. You will need to reapply your perfume more often in summer than in winter; and so it is a good idea to carry a smaller bottle in your purse. Apply perfume to your pulse points, such as on your wrists, back of your knees, cleavage and neck, for maximum impact. Don’t wear too much perfume or you may give yourself and others around you a headache. Avoid applying perfume to your clothes as it would stain it and not have the same affect. Also don’t spray it onto your hair as it could dry it out.
