Special care for colored hair

Most people choose to color their hair to cover grey hair or simply to try a new look. When you choose a hair color you need to know what chemicals you intend to put on your hair. Hair color contains chemicals that change the natural structure of your hair and weaken it. Make a smart choice by avoiding products that contain ammonia, alcohol and peroxide. There are several brands that offer hair color that is free of these ingredients.

Caring for colored hair

Make the right choice

Colored hair is weaker than hair that hasn’t been colored and hence, requires special care. The most obvious hair care tip that one can follow is to use products that have been created especially for colored hair. There are several organic hair product brands that offer a range of products for colored hair. These may be worth trying as you will avoid adding more chemicals to your hair. Also, you may not need to color all your hair if the aim is simply color grey or white hair that may be present mostly on the edge of your hairline.

Wash and condition well

It is best to shampoo only when your hair feels dirty. It is best to avoid a daily wash. Your hair may feel drier than usual and would require an appropriate conditioner. Choose a conditioner for colored hair and apply it only to the hair and particularly to the ends, and not on the scalp. Do ensure that you gently rinse off all trace of shampoo and conditioner. This will eliminate the chance of buildup on the scalp.

Trim your hair

A good haircut or trim can do wonders for your hair. You will require less styling products and processes when your hair is cut properly, and can be easily managed. A trim every six to eight weeks will also take care of any split ends that may have developed.

Avoid additional treatments

Most hair care experts recommend that one avoid straightening or perming colored hair. The hair, which has been weakened by coloring, would be damaged further by such treatments. If you want to get such a treatment, wait a few weeks after coloring your hair. Speak to your hair stylist and ask him to recommend a treatment based on the condition of your hair.

It is also a good idea to avoid using heating appliances such as hot rollers and curling irons. Minimize blow drying your hair. If you wish to blow dry, do so only when the hair is almost air dried. Instead of using a brush to style your hair, use your hands.

Protect well

If you swim in the sea or in a swimming pool protect your hair with a good swim cap. The sea water and the chlorinated pool water can be rather harsh on colored hair. Protect your tresses from sun damage by wearing a wide brimmed hat or a scarf when you are outdoors.
