How to avoid graying

In the last generation people would usually discover their first gray hair only when they were well past their fortieth birthday. Today, however, it is not unusual to find young people graying before they turn twenty. There are many reasons for hair graying and most of them are related to one’s diet and lifestyle. And so, even if you find a gray hair staring at you when you look in the mirror, you can take steps to avoid graying.

Your hair is nourished by the sebum that is naturally produced in the scalp. A sebum deficiency would lead to dull and lifeless hair. And this would eventually cause the hair to turn gray sooner than nature planned. Such a deficiency can be linked to poor nutrition, personal hygiene or illness. The external parts of your body, your hair, skin and nails reflect the state of the internal organ systems. A persistent cold or constipation can affect your hair and pallor.

To avoid graying you need to eat a diet that is rich in iron, vitamin B complex, iodine and copper. Foods rich in these vitamins and minerals should be incorporated in your daily meals. Eating a diet that is rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, pulses, dairy products and nuts would ensure that your body receives the rich nutrition that it needs. Limit your consumption of caffeine as it tends to dehydrate your body. Instead opt to drink eight to ten glasses of water every day. This would help keep the body hydrated and also rid it of toxins.

The scalp needs to be kept clean and you would need to choose a shampoo and conditioner that suit your hair type. It is best to avoid products that contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. It is a degreaser that may make your hair feel soft and fluffy but strips it of its natural oils. Do brush or comb your hair several times a day. This stimulates the blood circulation to the scalp and promotes good health. Use a wide toothed comb or a boar bristle brush. As you brush your hair, the sebum or natural oil is evenly spread through the hair, making it look lustrous.

A stressful lifestyle is also considered to be a cause for premature graying. It is important to have a regular exercise routine that would help you work out some of the stress in your body. This would also ensure that your lungs take in more air and oxygen, and also facilitate better blood circulation. You may wish to join a yoga class or meditate for some time in early morning or evening hours. Create a list of achievable things-to-do may help you deal with the many tasks you need to accomplish in a day. For some people the stress may be caused due to lack of sleep. It is important for you to pay attention to the needs of the body. Signs such as graying are indicators that it needs more care.
