Shampooing is one of the basic hair care processes. And yet, it is surprising how many people get it wrong. Are you doing more damage to your hair every time you shampoo it? Most often people are in a hurry and just go through the motions of washing their hair. This results in hair damage and a scalp buildup. Most shampoos contain chemicals. Imagine the damage caused when you leave residue on your scalp. Badly washed hair can cause scalp infections and dandruff.
How to wash your hair
In order to cleanse your hair well it is important to first wet it properly. It is a good idea to take a minute to drench your hair. It is best to use lukewarm water that is comfortable on your scalp and has a relaxing effect. Water has a cleansing effect on the body and also helps it calm down. When you are bathing, avoid thinking of the umpteen tasks that await you on the other side of the bathroom door. Concentrate only on the task at hand.
Getting the shampoo in
Once your hair is wet, put a dollop of shampoo, about the size of a quarter on your palm. Spread the shampoo on your palms and fingers and gently work it into your scalp and hair. Avoid putting all the shampoo at one point on your scalp and then working it around. Instead of piling up your hair on top of your head, as it will cause tangles, work the shampoo down your hair. You may also wish to spread the shampoo evenly with a wide toothed brush. Be gentle in your movements as wet hair tends to break easily.
Rinse well
Once you have lathered the hair well, rinse off the shampoo properly. Make sure that the water that runs into the drain is free of bubbles. Take care not to leave any residue on your hair and scalp. Repeat the same process with the conditioner. Do remember that the scalp produces natural oils and hence, limit the application of the conditioner to the hair only. It is best to follow the instructions as provided by the manufacturer and leave the shampoo or conditioner on for as long as suggested. This is especially important if you use a medicated product.
It is essential that you opt for hair care products that suit your hair type. Take the time and effort to read the key ingredients used in a product. It is best to avoid those that contain SLS, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, as it strips the hair and scalp of its natural oils. You may like to opt for an organic product instead. The last rinse for your hair wash should be with cold water as it helps close the pores of the hair.
After the shampoo
If you intend to use a leave in conditioner, do ensure that it is spread evenly through the hair. You can use a wide toothed comb to this end. Gently dry your hair with a towel and avoid tangling it. Avoid blow drying your hair regularly. When you do choose to blow dry, do use a heat protection spray.
