Thickened nails, brittle and ragged nails and nails with debris underneath them are some of the signs of nail fungus. You may also feel pain in your nails and notice a foul odor. If you suspect that you have nail fungus, then it is important to begin nail fungus treatment at the earliest. This will help control the infection and also stop it from spreading further. Your doctor will be able confirm if you require nail fungal treatment and will prescribe medication accordingly. This may include topical ointments and gels for application and prescription medication. It is important for you to continue applying or taking the medication that is prescribed for the recommended duration. Toenail fungal treatment usually takes longer than finger nail treatment.

Nail fungus treatment at home
Not only does nail fungus leave your nails looking unappealing it can also create complications which may require surgery. Your nails are sensitive as is the nail bed that supports them. Nerve endings are found on finger and toe nail beds and thus, it is important for you to efficiently care for nail fungal infection.

To understand how to treat nail fungus you need to understand the cause for this kind of fungal growth. Nail fungus usually affects the toe nails more than the finger nails as fungus requires a moist and warm environment to grow in. Our feet are enclosed in shoes for a large part of the day and hence, are warm and often moist with sweat. Also due to the lack of blood circulation in the area the fungal infection can develop quickly, and undetected.

There is a lot you can do to assist the medication prescribed for fungal treatment. Choose shoes that are well fitting and don’t cramp your feet. Too often people wear shoes that give little space to their toes. At the end of the day the toes are moist and warm, and ideal grounds for fungal growth. Wash your feet with an antibacterial foot wash, pat dry and wear shoes that leave your toes free. You may also wish you soak your feet in a vinegar and water mix (1:2 proportions). This too, reduces the chances of bacterial and fungal spread in the feet and toes.

Antifungal infection nail paint can be used to reduce the spread of the infection. The nail paint needs to be applied onto the nails and surrounding skin daily. At the end of a week the nail paint needs to be cleared off with alcohol and the anti fungal nail paint applied once again. Your doctor will be able to recommend nail paint and the duration of the treatment. Anti fungal topical ointments may also be used in conjunction with the prescribed treatment.  Tea tree oil is also effective in controlling the spread of fungal infection and you could apply it a few times in the days.
