What is sunburn? How to treat it

Sunburn may be caused due to exposure to the harsh rays of the sun for a long period of time, inadequate sun protection and from tanning beds. Exposure to UVA and UVB rays of the sun can lead to sunburn and also promote premature ageing. Half an hour of exposure to strong sunlight without enough sun protection can cause sunburn.

Recognizing sunburns

The condition can be quite painful as the skin becomes sore and raw. It would be reddish in color and inflamed. In many cases blisters are also found. Other signs of too much sun exposure may include vomiting, dehydration, chills and symptoms similar to those of the flu.

First course of action

When you realize that you have sunburn, it is best to first get indoors and take a cool water shower. This will cool the body and the inflamed skin. Gently pat yourself dry with a soft towel, taking care not to rub the raw skin roughly. Cold compress with a milk and water solution would provide relief. The milk aids in cooling the skin and natural fats moisturize the skin. If the condition is severe then the doctor may recommend medication that may be added to the cold compress.

What to apply on the sunburn

A mild over-the-counter pain killer would help alleviate the pain and discomfort. There are several moisturizing lotions and creams that are meant to treat sunburns. Choose one that contains natural ingredients such as aloe vera. It helps calm the skin and supports its natural healing process. If you can find an aloe vera plant, break a leaf, wash it and tear it open. Apply the gel like substance on the affected area. Some other natural sunburn remedies include the use of cocoa butter, lavender oil and coconut oil.

In case you develop blisters, take care not to scratch or burst them. The doctor would probably not recommend ointments that contain steroids. Leaving the blisters open to air will help them dry up quickly. If you are worried about getting dirt on the blisters, you can lightly bind the area with gauze. Wear loose fitting cotton clothes that allow the skin to breathe.

It is important to drink plenty of water to create a normal fluid balance in the body. After being indoors for a few hours, if you feel dizzy, or if you vomit, you need to consult a doctor. An IV treatment may be recommended in order to prevent dehydration. If the sunburn results in cracks and fissures in the skin it may be third degree burns and would require immediate medical attention.

How to avoid sunburn

It is best to stay indoors a few hours before and after noon, when the rays of the sun are at their strongest.  When you are going out apply a sun protection product with an SPF value of 45+and leave minimal skin bare to the sun’s rays. Try to wear clothes made of natural fiber, such as cotton, which breathe well. A hat and sun glasses would protect your face and eyes.
