Why is my skin flaky and itchy?

Flaky and itchy skin can be attributed to several reasons. This includes your choice of skin care products, nutrition and lifestyle. While some people have dry skin that may tend to get itchy if left uncared for, for others flaky and itchy skin is a sign of a skin ailment, possibly an allergic reaction. You may be reacting to something that you ate, used or were exposed to. If the skin appears discolored or reddish and is inflamed, the condition may be caused by a fungal infection and would have to be treated by a dermatologist.

Itchy and flaky skin in winter

Itchy and flaky skin in the winter season may be due to your skin being deprived of moisture. The skin produces natural oils that keep in naturally hydrated and soft. If you use products that are harsh on your skin and remove the natural oils, it will dry up and start feeling itchy.

Your skin is affected by the amount of moisture in the air. Central heating and the use of blowers reduce the moisture in the room and make it dry. Also the layers of clothing you wear constantly rub against your skin and dry it out. Dry skin is easily irritated by the clothing you wear or the detergent you use. You could avoid wearing synthetics for a few days and choose natural fabrics that breathe well. Using a detergent that doesn’t have a fragrance may also help.

You need to keep your skin well exfoliated and moisturized. Use a facial and body scrub to clean your face of dead skin cells, dirt and grime. Opt for moisturizers that contain ingredients that are gentle on the skin. You may want to look for products that contain Shea butter, olive oil or coconut oil. These nourish the skin naturally. Aloe vera, tea tree oil and lavender are well known for their anti-inflammatory and healing qualities. If you find that despite using lotions your skin is left dry in a few hours you could apply virgin olive oil or coconut oil after a shower. Remember to pat your body rather than rub it dry before you apply the oil or lotion.

Instead of soaking in a bath tub, a warm water shower leaves your body relaxed and skin well hydrated. Hot water tends to strip away your natural body oils. Instead of using a bar of soap, use a body wash that cleanses your body gently. Avoid products that contain a fragrance as the alcohol from the perfume also dries out the skin. For stubborn dry spots of the body such the elbows, knees and ankles you could use petroleum jelly.

Eat a diet rich in all food groups. Do ensure that you eat a few fruits and vegetables daily. Dry fruits such as almonds, raisins and walnuts are rich in vitamins and minerals that help keep your skin soft and well nourished.
