As the mercury drops and the winds chill, your skin takes a beating. If the elements are harsh on it, then the heating systems in homes and offices don’t help it either. The human skin tends to lose moisture rather quickly in the dry winter when the moisture level in a room that is well heated is less than 10%. Whatever your skin type you need to take precautions and special care of your skin during the winter season.
Products you will need to combat dry skin
It is important to remove the dead skin cells before you are ready to moisturize it. You can use a face and body scrub to exfoliate. Experts recommend that you use the scrub on dry skin rather then when it is wet. Similarly use a body brush to brush away dead skin before you are ready to take a shower. Use a soft baby brush to gently remove the dead cells at the lips.
Try to take more showers and avoid soaking in a tub as it dries up your skin quickly. It is best to use lukewarm water over hot water as it doesn’t strip your body of natural oils. If you do intend to take a bath then select the products you use carefully. Choose bath oils over bubble bath products. An oatmeal scrub is gentle on your skin and you may enjoy using it before you get into the tub. Buy rich and moisturizing soaps and avoid the kind that dries out your skin. You may also wish to buy organic skin care products that are gentle on your skin.
It is important to moisturize your skin and equally important to ensure that the moisture stays in. Choose products that contain ingredients that are natural moisturizers and contain vitamins and minerals that nourish the skin. You could use virgin coconut or olive oil. If you prefer lotions, then choose one that contains shea butter, coconut oil or aloe vera.
Every time you wash your hands, pat them dry, instead of rubbing them with the towel, and apply a moisturizer; using it on damp skin helps lock in the moisture. Before going to bed use a cream or lotion for the hands and feet and don gloves and socks. This helps the skin absorb the moisturizer more efficiently.
Carry a lip balm and a small bottle of moisturizer in your purse at all times. You could also keep a set of the same at your workplace and in your car. Investing in a humidifier will help increase the moisture in a room where it is placed, thus keeping your skin well hydrated. If you don’t drink adequate amounts of water, ensure that you drink at least eight to ten glasses every day.
