Most of us think of our skin as the outermost layer of the body, and seem to pay attention to it only when rashes or eruptions are experienced.  The skin reflects the internal state of the organs and the health and vitality of the body. In fact, a vitamin or mineral deficiency can be detected easily if one pays attention to a change in skin color and texture.

The skin plays versatile roles that most people are unaware of. It is an important organ because it helps detoxify the body. Along with the kidneys and liver, the skin also helps the body get rid of toxins. If the pores of the skin are clogged, they are unable to cleanse the body of poisonous waste. This can result in pimples and rashes. If your skin is not clean and smooth, it puts pressure on the liver and kidney functioning.

What is dry skin brushing?

Dry skin brushing is a unique technique that helps clear dead skin cells and dirt from the surface. By doing so, it ensures that the pores are open and function effectively. Dry skin brushing requires the use of a brush that has natural bristles. One may like to choose a small or long brush. Your choice may be dependent on how easily you can access the difficult to reach parts of the body, such as the middle of the back.

It is recommended that one dry brush the skin in the bathroom, prior to taking a shower. Some experts also suggest a sauna or a steam bath after brushing. The technique of brushing moves inwards from the extremities towards the heart. Begin by gently, but firmly, brushing the feet, legs and move upwards using long sweeping movements. Next, you will brush your stomach and back with strokes that are directed towards the heart. In case of rashes and inflammation, avoid the affected area. One may like to take a shower in hot and cold water as the temperature change also increases blood circulation in the body.

After your shower, pat your body dry and massage the skin with natural oils such as almond or jojoba oil. This will keep it well nourished, soft and supple. The brush should be washed once or twice a week and dried in the sun.

Benefits of dry brushing

There are many benefits of dry skin brushing. Since the skin is healthy, it is able to function efficiently. Brushing stimulates blood circulation to all parts of the body and facilitates better skin and body health. With good blood circulation the appearance of cellulite is reduced and fat deposits are evenly spread. The muscle tone of the body also benefits from this practice.

Good blood circulation gives the skin a healthy glow and also keeps skin eruptions at bay. The lymphatic system is stimulated with regular skin brushing and ensures that the body stays healthy and clean of toxins.
