There is little that can make you as miserable as a pair of ill fitting shoes. And yet, quite often so many of us find ourselves in that situation. Sometimes it may be because you just had to have a certain style of shoes that you sacrificed the comfort of wearing well fitting shoes. And sometimes it could be that you didn’t choose the right footwear. It is important that you give yourself enough time when you are going shopping for shoes. You need to consider a few things before you get started. What kind of shoes are you looking? Where will you wear them?
Selecting footwear
The most important thing you need to remember when you are shopping for shoes is to have them measured properly. Your shoes should be at least half a centimeter bigger than the size of your feet. This gives them adequate breathing space and allows your toes to stretch properly. Here are some important tips to keep in mind when shopping for shoes:
- Feet tend to swell up a bit after a day of standing and moving about. This makes it important for you to shop for shoes in the afternoon or in the evening.
- Wear the socks or stockings that you intend to wear with the shoes you are going to buy. So, if you are shopping for high heels don’t wear toweled socks to try them on and similarly don’t wear panty hose to try out sports shoes.
- Take your time. It is important that you take your time in trying out your shoes rather than end up with ill fitting footwear. This is a good reason to not buy shoes in a discount sale when the store is crowded and you would tend to hurry. Ideally you should opt for quality shoes that are well made and fit you well. It is better to invest in two pairs of great shoes rather than buy half a dozen shoes that may look fashionable but are uncomfortable to wear.
- Try on the pair of shoes you like, rather than just on one foot. Now press the front of the shoes to ensure that between your big toe and the front of the shoe there is at least enough space for the width of your finger.
- It is a good idea to stand and take a few steps to get a good idea of how comfortable and well fitting the shoes are. Walk in front of a mirror to see how they look on your feet.
- Different shoe styles of the same size may fit differently and so it is important to always try on your shoes before you buy them.
It is crucial that you match the right shoes with the clothes you are wearing and the activities you intend to take on. Opt for closed shoes in black, brown or navy blue for the office. Flip flops are great around the house and for the beach, while pumps and high heels are ideal for parties. Choose sports shoes that suit the game or activity you bought them for.
